Dr. Stefania Bonaccorso

I trained in Italy at the University of Rome La Sapienza as medical doctor and general adult psychiatrist. After my medical degree, I attended Saint Ann Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Paris on a clinical fellowship awarded by La Sapienza University. I then started my academic career with a PhD on neuro-psychoimmunology in Antwerp, Belgium and concluded in Maastricht, Netherlands. I travelled to the United States to the University of Boulder, Colorado; and Vanderbilt University in Tennessee to pursue a post-doctoral fellowship awarded by the Italian National Centre of Research and then funded by NARSAD. This was to continue my studies on the interactions between depression and the immune system and in psychopharmacology.

I currently work as consultant psychiatrist for the NHS and in private practice. I accumulated over twenty years of clinical experience. I worked for several years as inpatients consultant and have a fair amount of knowledge of dealing with the assessment and management of acute psychosis , schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I now work in a primary mental health team in Islington where I review patients with a wide variety of mental health conditions including personality disorders, PTSD, anxiety, depression and first episode psychosis.

I continue to be involved in research and maintain honorary academic positions with several universities such as UCL, King’s and University Hertfordshire. I continue to be committed to providing best possible care to my patients and I am committed to providing best possible training to younger generations of psychiatrists and foundation doctors. I support trainees as site tutor for Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. I hold a position as academic secretary for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and organise academic programme for colleagues in the London region.
