Dr. Stefania Bonaccorso has graduated from medical school at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1995 and obtained her certificate of training in psychiatry from the same university in 2001.
Since she was a young medical graduate she has started collecting several research and work experiences both in Europe and US. The first one at the prestigious hospital for neuropsychiatric disorders at Saint’ Anne in Paris under the supervision of Prof. Olie’ and Prof. Henri Loo followed by a fellowship at the University of Antwerp in Belgium with Prof. Scharpe’ and Prof Maes.
She has also accumulated a considerable research experience in psychoneuroimmunology and psychopharmacology that yielded her a PhD from the University of Maastrich in 2005 and a post-doctoral fellowship in US with Prof. Meltzer in 2006.
Since 2008, she holds an appointment as clinical lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry at the Maudsley. Her current research interests focus on metabolic abnormalities, childhood abuse and sexual function in patients with first psychotic episode. She has been given NARSAD Young Investigator Awards to pursue her research interests both in 2005 and 2009.
In clinical practice she has more than ten years experience and she is used to deal with several types of patients’ population. She has vast experience with patients with personality disorders having worked as consultant psychiatrist for an inpatients unit of female at high risk of self-harm and suicide; she is also skilled in working with people with severe and chronic mental illness having worked at the National Psychosis Unit. She also deals with patients affected from anxiety, depression in the community where she works as consultant for Central North West London Foundation NHS Trust.
Also, her understanding of the differences between the Italian and British health service poses her in the unique position of offering knowledgeable advice to expats looking for medical attention. She has successfully collaborated with Italian health services to repatriate numerous citizens with mental health related difficulties.
